What Is The Proper Standard Of Care For An Animal

Standards of Intendance and 5 Freedoms

In 2010, the Association of Shelter Veterinarians came up with Guidelines for Standards of Intendance in Animal Shelters. Everyone who volunteers or works in a shelter should be familiar with them. They are based on the "Five Freedoms." The Five Freedoms aren't a new concept. It was developed in 1965 in the Britain for livestock. Information technology's just recently that people take started to utilize these basic concepts to companion animals in shelters.

The 5 Freedoms are:

  1. Liberty from Hunger and Thirst – by ready access to fresh water and diet to maintain wellness and vigor.
  2. Freedom from Discomfort – by providing an appropriate surround including shelter and a comfy resting area.
  3. Freedom from Pain, Injury or Affliction – past prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.
  4. Freedom to Limited Normal Beliefs – past providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the beast's own kind.
  5. Freedom from Fright and Distress – by ensuring weather condition and handling which avoid mental suffering.

These standards help shelters determine their Capacity for Care, which can be establish on a separate page.
